Unlike the European explorers, adventurers, colonizers and traders who preceded him, Charles Walter Kinloch ("Bengal Civilian") travelled through Penang, Singapore and Java in 1852 simply to recuperate from illness. As well as being one of the first tourists, he was also one of the first to write a book about his travels, providing an account of his experiences in South-East Asia.
